HARRELL ROAD TO REMAIN CLOSED TO TRAFFIC
Secondary road in Stafford County will be closed through Monday, February 11

FREDERICKSBURG – Route 623 (Harrell Road) in Stafford County will remain closed to through traffic at the Claiborne Run crossing until Monday, February 11.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) maintenance crews are planning to create and install temporary covers over two broken grate lids at the water crossing. It is anticipated that a temporary repair can be completed by next Monday.

Harrell Road closed to through traffic on Thursday morning. VDOT crews are examining the entire culvert structure this week to develop a permanent repair.

The steel grates on the road surface cover a culvert that carries water beneath Harrell Road. The grate covers are removable so maintenance crews can easily lift them to extract trash and debris.

On Thursday, one of the grate covers fell into the culvert. The concrete ledge that supported it failed. VDOT will be studying the condition of each grate cover and concrete ledge as part of the repair work.

VDOT has barricaded Harrell Road, and has posted message boards alerting motorists that the road is closed for repair. Motorists are asked to obey the traffic barriers for their safety.

Harrell Road is located between Forbes Street (Route 627) and Deacon Road (Route 607).
