By Public Information Officer M.C. MORRIS MONCURE
May 10, 2017

On May 9, 2017, at approximately 7:35 PM, a citizen reported a white van erratically driving west on Kings Highway. The witness saw the vehicle run off the road, jump the median, and hit and uproot a guard rail. The vehicle changed direction more than once and was subsequently parked at the Burger King on Kings Highway. Deputy D.G. French and Deputy J.T. Forman responded to the scene and observed the vehicle, a white van, with its front bumper completely missing.

As Deputy French approached the vehicle, he observed the windshield was also damaged and had blood and hair fragments embedded in the shattered glass. The van’s driver’s side door was open and a female subject was standing beside it. Two male subjects were standing nearby. A fourth subject, who appeared to be injured was seated inside the van.

The female requested to use the bathroom and was escorted inside the restaurant. Deputy Forman waited in the hallway for the female who was overheard on her cell phone requesting an unknown subject to respond to the scene by saying, “Get here and tell the cops you were driving so Teddy doesn’t get locked up.”

Medical units responded to the scene to render assistance to the injured male, identified as Ted Veverka, who was unsteady on his feet, slurring his words and having a difficult time responding to questions. Mr. Veverka admitted to Deputy French he had been drinking. After being medically evaluated he was given field sobriety tests. Mr. Veverka was also found to be wanted on charges from a neighboring jurisdiction.

Ted Edward Veverka, age 29, of Harvest Lane in Spotsylvania, VA., was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, No Driver’s License, Hit and Run/Property Damage, Failure to Wear a Seatbelt, Traffic Lane Violation, and Improper Brakes. He was incarcerated on a $1,000 secured bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail. Tara Lynn Drehs, of the same address, was charged with Obstructing Justice and Public Swearing and Intoxication and was incarcerated and held on a $3000 secured bond.
